Lay Me Out Softly Short Stories edition by Francesca Lia Block Literature Fiction eBooks
It's very difficult to write about Francesca Lia Block's books. For one, it's difficult to express how magical and brilliant and pithy and emotional her stories are. FLB does not use literary clichés. She uses simple language that conveys much more than just letters on a page. She doesn't tell a story -- she makes you live it. Don't be fooled by her young adult books. Her stories are ageless. They speak about beauty and love and heartache and longing and sadness and bliss, which are universal and not exclusive to any group. When you first start reading her books you might be taken aback by her style -- for a second it feels unedited and almost stream-of-consciousness. But only for a second. She keeps the story flowing smoothly, intertwined with flashbacks and internal dialogue and enough emotions to keep you reeling. There is not one book or story I can read of hers without crying (I must admit I am quite emotional). I have read and/or own nearly all her books and they are the kind you read over and over again because you simply can't not. Now, about "Lay me out softly." This is a small collection of short stories, some of which have been previously published in anthologies. This book is not a YA novel. It is for adults. There is an innocent girl-stripper and a detective and three heads, but it is not a mystery story. There is sex, but sex in FLB novels is never vulgar or sappy. It is raw and electric. There are revenants -- undead -- but it is not a zombie story: it is about living. (This one was my favorite, because I do love zombies, even when they are not.) And then there are more zombies. And a vampire and bullies and teenage love. And shape-shifters that are not monsters. And Greek gods, a constant presence in FLB's works. And fairies, and a story about... underthings. And musical demons. There is a story that might be more fact than fiction. (When you read as many of FLB's book and her blog as I have, you come to see elements of her own life that she puts in her stories, and that gives them soul and breath.)
If you are already a fan of her works, I am sure you will read "Lay me out softly" and love it. If you are new to her magical worlds, this is as good a start as any. Even if you do not enjoy mythical creatures, you will love this book because it is about people, no matter who they are or where they come from or what they look like. It is a book about hearts.

Lay Me Out Softly Short Stories edition by Francesca Lia Block Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Francesca Lia Block writes with a magical flair in everything she does, and this book of short stories is no exception. The only downside one might feel as though they're reading a food review for the same restaurant each time a character goes out to eat, and there's a bit of repetitiveness when it comes to many characters' interests and personalities. Still, a good read.
Man... I hate giving anything FLB writes three-star rating, but I honestly had trouble with this collection. While the last three stories are fantastic - true magic - the others are not up to par. They're rushed, messy, clunky, and unsatisfying, which is especially bizarre because they're nearly all republished works from other anthologies. I can't recommend this over her other works, but "Psyche and Cupid," "Faeries on Facebook," and "Saturn's Return," are worth picking this up for, even if those are the only stories you read.
Excellent collection of Block's short stories that were published during her evolution into darker themes and subject matter.
Dive into these stories on a dark night and hang out with a private investigator, zombies, a stripper, a killer, werewolves, and ghosts. Each story is vivid, supernatural, and engrossing. They will make your dreams and nightmares seem tame in comparison.
Then again, as one of Block's characters mentions...our own "real world" news is often like a horror movie...
The first snippet of "Lay Me Out Softly" I ever read, about a grotto and three heads and a chance meeting, stayed in my mind for years until it came out in this ebook and I was able to read the entire story! The imagery in these stories will haunt you once you've had a glimpse! It's as if her words had the power to bewitch!
I am an avid collector of Block's work, yet somehow I missed many of these stories in various anthologies. "Lilith," about a loser gaining strength from a vampire/succubus, is one of my favorites that I have read and re-read multiple times. I've already begun to do the same with the other stories, as they are layered with imagery and beg to be re-read. Who can resist the charms of "The Real Housewives of Mt. Olympus," or a story entitled "Underthings?" I am ecstatic to have them all in one place.
If you're a fan of FLB, don't miss this!
Francesa Lia Block's stories are magical healers, and this fantastic collection of Block's short stories is no exception. Francesca weaves her magic into tales of loss, pain and fear, leaving her characters, and her readers, with a sense of hope. Lay Me Out Softly demonstrates her deft hand in stories from young adult to erotica, all of which never shy away from the ugliness of life; rather, Francesca conveys beauty in the darkness with her signature style of sensual prose. "Revenant's Anonymous" is zombie loving with a very human touch, while "Unless You Change" forces us to expand our understanding of sight and examine our fear of mortality. "The Real Housewives of Mount Olympus," originally published in Francesca Lia Block's brilliant anthology "Love Magick", captures reality TV obsession, Goddess style, with hilarious, and often touching, results. "Underthings" may just be my favorite story, though each story is so wonderful that it's hard to choose! More than a journey of self-discovery, "Underthings" has a protagonist that struggles to reclaim her own name while repeatedly getting her heart broken, her undergarments a reflection of herself. The final story, "Saturn's Return Bad Things", is the perfect end to this collection, a story that truly embodies the healing spirit that runs throughout Francesca's work. I only wish "Lay Me Out Softly" was in physical book form, as I would love to be able to add it to my collection of FLB books on my shelves! For now, I will continue to keep it on my phone and take a little bit of FLB's healing magic with me wherever I go.
